More From Less
My friends and I have a joke circling around lately admitting that the millennial dream is to live in a van down by the river (if you haven’t seen this sketch, watch it. I’ll wait).
Have you noticed all the craze surrounding tiny houses, renovated trailers, and outfitted sprinter vans? These trends aren’t just popular because the rent is too damn high. People are searching for more meaning out of their surroundings. The 20th century lifestyle of settling into a suburban home and filling it with dispensable, material things is not working for a large group of people. Instead, these experiential humans are expecting more from less.
So what does this mean for you? Consider your own home: your plants, your furniture, your silverware, your junk hoarder drawer (you know which one). The fire alarm goes off in the middle of the night, what do you grab to take with you?
I have my own little go-bag, containing a bundle of cash, passport, and every meaningful letter, card, or note I’ve ever received. Maybe I’m sentimental, but I’d rescue those handwritten letters over anything else in my home.
The next time you think about reaching out to a friend, client, or relative, consider sending some old-fashioned, handwritten mail. Likewise, if you need to find a meaningful gift for a special someone, how can it be personable and hold value? Pretend you’re about to sell everything and move into a van (a nice sprinter, but a van nonetheless). What will you hold onto?
