A volunteer opportunity.

Creating homes for Community First was a tremendous chance to use design to empathize and prioritize marginalized people.

Community First is a non-profit focused on helping the chronically homeless by providing affordable housing and empowering community. Offering tiny homes and shared amenities, like kitchens, laundry, restrooms, and gardens, Community First supports the residents through building connections with their neighbors and encouraging sustainable sources of income.

With less than 500 SF to work with, we used neutrals balanced with natural wood tones to create a cozy and clean atmosphere. A butcher block countertop, sourced from IKEA, complimented the soft-white painted shiplap walls. The interior design served as a warm backdrop for the resident to insert their own personality.

While small, the homes at Community First offer overflowing opportunities for its residents. The design evoked casual, southern minimalism, combining pine wood and soft whites to support a calm atmosphere. The screen element at the front porch helps keep the house cool from the harsh western sunlight. The screens and wood lattice are also unique to this particular home, contributing to a sense of pride and joy for its resident.
