A friend recently introduced me to the Japanese term, wabi-sabi. Its meaning lies in understanding and embracing the abundant imperfections and transience of life. We were admiring the asymmetrical dimples of a ceramic mug, appreciating the form and function for our morning coffee.

This past year, the importance of creating and sharing every day has restored a part of myself that I left on the wayside several years back. Much of my learning I owe to Seth Godin’s workshop and the smattering of generous designers, artists, and mentors across the globe who flung themselves on a journey to explore our values and contributions to our communities. Whether it’s writing, brainstorming, coding, or cooking, the commitment to creating daily was an uncomfortable shake through my armored exterior of perfectionism. In practice, the anxiety-inducing rants of my inner critic were slowly swallowed by an overwhelming confidence born from daily explorations of creativity. Five-minute napkin sketches and hours-long drawing sessions were shared equally, eroding my belief that my work must be perfect in order to possess value.

I challenge you to find your daily practice and discover how you can share it with others. Not because you seek validation or fame, but because the act of sharing generates an incredible amount of gratitude for your own talents and discipline, opening your mind to possibilities that have never occurred to you before. Share and connect with others to empower the influence of wabi-sabi and our great imperfections. Grow intentionally, move mindfully, and share generously, soon you’ll be surprised by the opportunities that will blossom.
